Little Things

It’s the little things that can make a trip or break it. For me, the little thing, which I almost didn’t bring, is a heating coil.

Now, I’m sure you’re probably saying to yourself, “why would you bring a heating coil on a motorcycle trip to South America?” The short answer is: mocha.

When I travel, I prefer my morning beverage to be a mocha (coffee and cocoa). In this case, I use a sugar-free vegan cocoa mix from New Zealand, Avalanche. When I’m camping, it’s easy to make – use one of my (two) campstoves to heat water for instant coffee (yes, I’m a heretic – I drink instant coffee on the road if I have to make it), then top off the boiling coffee with some cool water and the cocoa mix. Stir gently, and instant go juice!

In the US, you’ll usually find a coffee maker in every hotel or motel room. Apparently, not so in Mexico. Now, my sample is limited (two hotels), but neither have a coffee maker, and the restaurants usually aren’t open when I awake and need to feed my caffiene drug addiction.

Hence, the coil heater. Even comes in handy for making a quick Ramen Glop (ramen noodles with whatever else you want to add – in my case today, it was canned veggies and tuna).

The little things – they can make or break the trip. Keep that in mind the next time you decide to hop on a motorcycle and travel over 10,000 miles.
